What do you do?

Victoria Mattingly Ph.D. started Mattingly Solutions in 2019 with the desire to improve the human experience at work by helping organizations build inclusive workplace cultures through measurement and fostering more inclusive behaviors. Mattingly Solutions is a  woman-owned, women-led business currently serving clients ranging from 40 to 50k employees across industries including retail, energy, technology, and financial services.

I earned my Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology to improve the human experience at work. For my dissertation, I built and evaluated a commercial training program in partnership with DDI with the purpose of training male executives to be allies and accelerate women in leadership initiatives. Working for consulting firms, I was positioned as a subject matter expert to help Fortune 100 organizations build more inclusive workplace cultures via behavior change interventions and co-creating data-driven diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategies and implementation plans.

What inspired you to start your business?

In 2019, I burnt out from the consulting life. For the first time in my adult life, I took time to be with my son and reflect on the type of career I wanted to have. I still desired to improve the human experience at work by helping organizations build inclusive workplace cultures through measurement (i.e., accountability) and fostering more inclusive behaviors--from executives down through the entire workforce. I especially sought to serve underrepresented groups in the workplace by partnering with HR and DEI functions to build more equitable systems, as well as inspiring and training majority group members to leverage their privilege and status to advance DEI outcomes through allyship. With these goals in mind, I started Mattingly Solutions in August of 2019.

What's special about your business?

Since beginning this journey as a solopreneur, I've grown our team to three co-founders, a consultant, several sub-contractors, a number of amazing interns, and various partners. Check out our growing team at https://www.mattinglysolutions.com/team. We are a proud woman-owned, woman-led business. We have served clients ranging from 40 to 50k employees across industries including retail, energy, technology, and financial services. We put out DEI thought leadership across multiple channels, with the goal of providing value and resources to our growing audience. I feel honored and grateful every day that I get to do this work--especially since we are building a company that values people before profit, providing a counter-example to the consulting industry that usually means working 60+ hours a week at the expense of employee well-being. We are building a zebra, not a unicorn: https://medium.com/zebras-unite/zebrasfix-c467e55f9d96

What influenced you to seek help from SCORE?

Although I am a PhD-trained and experienced organizational psychologist and consultant, I have had to learn the mechanics of running a business from scratch. I sought out a SCORE mentor to help with some of my business owner growth areas, including managing finances, forecasting, sales, funding options, and business operations. Kathy has already been an amazing resource thus far.

How SCORE helped.

We just started working together, but Kathy has already helped me with recommending some funding resources, providing business planning and forecasting resources, and much-needed psycho-social support with the inevitable challenges and stresses that come with leading and growing a small business.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a small business?

Get clear on your vision early on and stick with it. Fall in love with the problem you're trying to solve, but be flexible on the solution--let your customers tell you what they need. Surround yourself with others who share your vision AND your work ethic. Treat failures as learning opportunities. Ask for help when you need it--but there's no need to take EVERYONE'S advice. Learn what only YOU can and should do in the business and try to outsource the rest--especially the tasks that drain your energy and joy.
